Mental Health Diseases

Mental health diseases are among the most prevalent forms of diseases, and among the least diagnosed. The impact of the condition of the global economy is significant, with the World Economic Forum estimating losses from mental health challenges at 4 percent of the global GDP (Bloom et al., 2012). The prevalence of mental diseases has been attributed to spreading norm about treatment options, the confluence of societal factors such as stress, polarized global social conditions particularly us vs them ideology, and the persistent gender/ethnic/racial discrimination and violence (Orange and Weiner, 2019). In society, mental health has been least prioritized by schools, workplaces and in people’s lives (Thorpe et al., 2015). Since whole healthcare is more than treating the ill, the role of educating and treating the mentally ill has been left to the private sector.(If you need a similar paper, contact buytermpaper online).

Everyone should be aware of mental health, thus, institutions such as Vero Wellness Center are critical in creating awareness. Scholars and medical industry experts agree that never before has there been the need to improve people’s mental healthcare (Lieberman et al., 2017).  The authors posit that the broken government mental healthcare system has adverse effects on the country’s social fabric, and, therefore, requires immediate attention. The country can no longer afford a piecemeal approach to current mental health problems; thus, the private sector must take up the obligation to improve the lives of the mentally ill as a business and as part of social responsibility.

Lake and Turner (2017) highlight the urgency needed in mental healthcare in the United States. The authors posit that current treatments and the dominant model of mental health care fail to adequately address the complex challenges posed by mental illness, “which accounts for one-third of adult disability globally.” The authors argue that there should be a paradigm shift in the manner mental healthcare is practiced in the United States, beginning with improving standards of clinician training, conducting research to improve the provision of healthcare, and the redeveloping the model of approach of the industry. For this reason, Wellness Centers should be strategically positioned to address emerging challenges in the industry, given their access, proximity to patients and provision of specialized care. Statistics regarding mental health in the United States project an image of despair, whereby people depend on antidepressant despite their limited efficacy and the high costs of treatment. According to Demyttenaere et al. (2004), there were 350 million individuals living with mental health conditions in the United States, a number that has risen significantly since. The government has also neglected mental health including treatment, going by the lack of statistics and inaccurate estimations of the number of persons living with such conditions – a factor that reducing budget allocations to mental health worsens the situation. According to Thornicroft et al. (2017), the prevalence of persons with mental health conditions in the United States, particularly among persons aged between 15 and 44, results from the lack of treatment following the psychological, social and occupational costs involved with the disease. The authors contend that besides the costs borne by patients, the U.S. federal government incurs in excess of $30 billion annually on persons with mental health conditions (Trautmann, Rehm, and Wittchen, 2016).

Hawryluk (2016) argues that the situation in the U.S. regarding persons with mental health conditions is dire, particularly in urban areas where the Kaiser Permanente (KP) outpatient mental health clinics are located. The author contends that there is a large gap between mental care needs and available resources – a gap that has developed significantly lately in suburban, semirural, and rural areas throughout the country. The authors argue that the subspecialty of psychiatry as one of the oldest professions in the medical field, and with many professionals nearing retirement, the situation is expected to worsen. Hawryluk (2016) points to worrying trend where the number of psychiatrists has reduced significantly across the country, while the mental health institutions in the country over rely on the few available practitioners. The authors state, “Training other health care practitioners in basic psychotherapy techniques and prescribing psychopharmacologic regiments for common psychiatric disorders will become an essential future strategy for the government if it seeks to expand mental healthcare in the country.”
